Spiders!!! Day 2

Anyone else teaching spiders now or coming up soon?!  I really enjoy teaching about spiders (as long as they stay out of my sight!) because my students get really excited about them... like I can hardly make it through a page of a book without my kiddos sharing their wealth of knowledge about spiders ;)!

So, today after reading a nonfiction book about spiders, we did a little fact or opinion activity.  I gave my students 2 index cards which they labeled Fact and Opinion.  I put the Power Point up on my projector and we went through the slides. We read the sentence, and then my students either held up their fact or opinion card based on what the sentence was.  This was a great way to quickly check who grasped the concept.

You can get that activity {HERE} for free :)  Here is an example of the slides that I included, but there are several more in the download...

Since we are always in desperate need of reading grades, we did a fact/opinion sort afterwards!  You can grab that up {HERE}

Now, I'm off schedule with my plans because I whipped this up instead of doing what I had originally planned!  Oh well!  Sometimes you just gotta wing it ;)

Ohhhh, and here's a video that I'm sure your kiddos will LOVE (spiders eating bees.... pretty entertaining!)!  It's just about 2 minutes, so it won't eat up a ton of your time either!

Thanks so much for sharing your spider stuff! This is my first year doing a spider unit because I can't stand spiders :) but I'm sucking it up for my kiddos :)

We are doing the spider research freebie you shared... this was the best I'd ever seen my kids on the computer during our reading stations! Can't wait to see the rest of their projects!

You always have such awesome ideas. Thanks for sharing them. Question: Do you follow a certain type of curriculum in your district?

I read your post about spiders and spider poems yesterday morning and changed my plans accordingly - it fit perfectly into our writing slot and was a nice scaffolded intro to writing our first poems. But now, after reading today's post I will be changing again...but it will be worth it because fact and opinion is a difficult concept for some. What better way to dive in than with a topic of such high interest like spiders? And the video clip? Oh my they are going to LOVE it. I am an experienced (note how I did't say old) teacher who follows your blog daily. Your ideas and activities are the bomb. I feel like we are teaching partners:)

I hate to be "that" person, but I saw on facebook that you posted a nouns test yesterday. My laptop was lucky enough to catch the FBI virus so I am without a home computer till further notice. (dying) To make a long story short, I can't access the link through facebook at work, so is there anyway you can post it on your site or email it to me? If not, I understand. Hoping your health is better and keep up the positive attitude. It is an inspiration to all!

Thank you for the great spider activities, especially the pics for the Fact/Opinion ppt. I've been studying spiders with my class and these are perfect additions!
